About Me

Curaçao
It is the year 2007 and Charles McDonald has decided to take a Gap year. I am sailing from Cape Town to St. Helena, then to Ascension, then Fernando, then Fortaleza and ending up in Trinindad in the Caribbean. I will then go to the North section of the Caribbean and try and find work for about 6 months. And then to England in September.

Day 50 15th February 2007 Thursday Position @ 0900 S03°15.436 W037°41.236

So we have just dropped the anchor in a harbour in Fortaleza. It has been a hairy and interesting day! I woke up this morning because I was thrown across my cabin. Why? The wind picked up to 40 knots and we gybed, apparently on purpose, I have my doubts. We where surfing down the waves at 10 à 11 knots. Which was really good cause it meant that we would get there that much faster which considering the fact that we where going to arrive at midnight was a good thing, I hope that all makes sense. As it is we have just arrived and it is 2000. About 30 miles out the wind picked up and about 20 miles off the wind died to 5 à 10 knots. We saw some interesting little fishing boats, see picture. They are like a Dabchick, with an engine and 6 people on board and a bunch of crates for the fish. A Dabchick is a small sailing dinghy with a flat deck and a sail. A bit like a floating bit of wood with some things on the top, including a sail. Enough babbling from me. As it ended up we started towing the 12 ton, and 12.5m yacht with the 2.5m motor dinghy which struggles to get the two of us to land as it is. We decided to drop the anchor after three hours of towing because the water was shallow enough and we where worried that the dinghy would run out of petrol.
Before any of the sailors make any comments we had 2 knots of wind so we couldn’t sail in. To make our lives harder we where surrounded by rocks and three wrecks. Sleep peacefully in your beds, which aren’t rocking about.
