About Me

CuraƧao
It is the year 2007 and Charles McDonald has decided to take a Gap year. I am sailing from Cape Town to St. Helena, then to Ascension, then Fernando, then Fortaleza and ending up in Trinindad in the Caribbean. I will then go to the North section of the Caribbean and try and find work for about 6 months. And then to England in September.

Time for a full update I think. This will be long.

Okay so I arrived in Trinidad on the 11th of March, got in contact with Estelle Blet through a friend, Dave Bernett. She took me on and I flew to Cuba. I spent 3 days in Cuba which was very cool! Listened to Santana live, unfortunately it wasn't Carlos but it was very good. Saw a spectacular in a discotheque thing. All very interesting and beautiful. Got lots of pics that I'll put on later.

So then we left on Wild Tigris on the 21st. In short it was a 5-6 day sail and it went wonderfully. The wind and current where against us so we had to use the engine a lot which, for me, isn't the nicest but it doesn't make a big difference. It also meant that watching DVDs was a completely liable option. Lots and lots of lightning at night and some very awesome stuff. Absolutely huge strikes and 100's of them.

The most important thing I have found in sailing is that a good crew is the most important thing and although they where all french and so there were conversations in French I got on with them fantastically and we where all good together. Three very nice and easy going people. On top of that the boat is beautiful and sails well.

We arrived here, in St. Maarten, a week ago. I have been living on the boat and spending the day doing this and that. Helping with bits and pieces. Been making a few "friends" and thus making connections. Been out a couple of nights to some good parties, dancing and drinking a bit. What a doos? Had a bottle of 1999 Bordeaux White wine last night, very nice. The owner of the boat no longer likes it?!?!?!

Now here is a little true story and it shows how small this world is. When I was in Fortaleza I met a South African guy doing the same trip as me on a catamaran called Cha-Lee, his name is Dave Bernett. We had a beer together and a chat of sorts. Nice guy all round. 3 weeks later I met him in the laundry in Trinidad. He gives me the email address for Estelle, skipper of Wild Tigris and a week later I'm sailing from Cuba to St. Maarten. Now after a week in St. Maarten I walk into him today. What are the chances????

THE PLAN FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS
A boat, no idea what, is looking for a crew to go from BVI's to Fort Lordadale in the next few days. Flights paid for and a payed job. Meeting the crew organiser tonight.

Also lined up is a delivery from here to the med on Wild Tigris leaving on the 23rd April and arriving their at the end of May. Then I'm planning on being in the UK for the Month of June and then I skipper a 33ft boat from Turkey to France, a 3-4 week trip.

And that for the moment is it other than that I am having a really great time.
